Who We Are

Tomorrow's Women in Science and Technology (TWIST) is an Austin, Texas-based non-profit corporation. Our mission is to promote science and math education and career planning for girls and women. TWIST's volunteer staff is composed of Austin-area scientists, engineers, librarians, business people, teachers, writers, artists, and parents working together to achieve TWIST's goals.

This team has been working together informally since 1989. In 1995 we formed TWIST as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation in order to expand our work with Austin women and girls.

What We Do

With the support of community organizations, businesses and foundations, TWIST organizes annual Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) conferences for middle school girls. Austin EYH conferences are all-day events at which middle-school age girls attend hands-on workshops led by local women who are pursuing careers in math, science, engineering, and other technology-based fields.

TWIST also produces a science Newsletter, which is sent to all EYH alumnae throughout their middle school years.

Why We Do It

Women are still underrepresented in math, science, and engineering-related fields. Many girls and women shy away from any sort of scientific or technical activity, despite the importance of these areas in modern society. We want to fix that. Since research has shown that interest in math and science begins to wane in early adolescence, we want to intervene then to make sure that girls keep all their options open.

What You Can Do

If you are interested in getting involved with TWIST, as an organizer, as an EYH presenter, or as a sponsor, we would love to hear from you. Fill out our information form and send it to us.
